IMPERFORATE HYMEN

HYDROCOLPOS

HYDROMETROCOLPOS

Imperforate hymen is usually detected in the neonatal period when the infant presents with a lower abdominal cystic swelling and bulging membranes at the introitus. It may present at menarchy as cyclic abdominal pain with pelvic distention or urinary obstruction.

Although hydrocolpos and hydrometrocolpos usually occur secondary to imperforate hymen, they may occur independently secondary to transverse vaginal septum or vaginal or cervical atresia (1).

The prenatal diagnosis of hydro(metro)colpos has been reported as early as 25 weeks' of gestation (2) although most cases are described in the third trimester of pregnancy or after birth (3-5).

Hydrometrocolpos is a rare anomaly, but accounts for 15% of abdominal masses in female infants, surpassed in frequency only by hydronephrosis (6).
