ULTRASOUND OF FETAL
ASCITES
|
Fetal ascites is defined as a rim of fluid in the fetal peritoneal cavity,
at least partly surrounding the liver and the fetal bladder.
- The sonolucent areas can be demonstrated
surrounding loops of bowel or outlining the intra-abdominal portion of the
umbilical vein.
- AS the amount of fluid
increases, the abdomen will enlarge, and the falciform ligament and
umbilical vein will straighten out.
- The liver appears suspended.
- In severe cases, small bowel
will float freely in the ascitic fluid and the omental sac may become
visible.
