ASYMMETRIC HYPERTROPHY OF THE
INTERVENTRICULAR SEPTUM
This usually occurs in cases of chronic volume overload, as the ventricle responds by adding new sarcomeres in-series with existing ones.
Often seen in fetuses of diabetic mothers.
Wall thickness increases in proportion to an increase in chamber size.
CONCENTRIC HYPERTROPHY OF THE
INTERVENTRICULAR SEPTUM
This usually occurs in chronic pressure overload. Wall thickness increases as sarcomeres are added in-parallel to existing ones.
The interventricular septum and posterior heart wall is thickened.
Cardiac chamber size may or may not be reduced.
