We did not demonstrate any association between unilateral and bilateral cysts and karyotypic abnormalities. Although this finding has been noted by other workers, the high yield of unilateral cysts by some authors is probably related to near field artifact obscuring the near field choroid plexus and ventricle. The near field ventricle cannot be routinely seen from 18 weeks onward due to reverberation artifact by the near field cranium. To overcome this problem, scans through the anterior, posterior or posterolateral fontanelle are necessary.
