Reach the IVC in the same
funnel shaped structure as the ductus venosus
The position and direction of
the hepatic veins tend to favor a functional division of the proximal IVC.
Left and medial
hepatic veins join the ductus venosus on the left side of the proximal
IVC and preferentially shunt blood to the LA via the foramen ovale.
Right hepatic vein joins
the IVC on the right side and shunts blood to the RA.
Oxygen saturation is higher
in the left hepatic vein when compared to the right hepatic vein (left
lobe of liver supplied by branches of umbilical vein wheras the right lobe
is supplied almost exclusively by portal blood).
