ANEMBRYONIC PREGNANCY (BLIGHTED OVUM
PREGNANCY) |
- Gestational sac in which the embryo has failed to develop.
- "Blighted ovum" is a bad name as it may be a blighted sperm (1).
- TVS one may see embryonic remnants due to inadequate development of the embryo (1).
ULTRASOUND |
- Gestational sac >13mm without a yolk sac.
- Gestational sac >18mm without an embryo.

Normal chorio-decidual reaction. ·
Mean sac diameter = 20 mm ·
No yolk sac or fetal parts present |

|
- An abnormally large amnion or an amnion without a visualized embryo "empty amnion" may also be present.
- Thin (<2mm) weakly hyperechoic or irregular choriodecidual reaction.
- Gestational sac growth < 0.6mm/day.
