- Measurements of thoracic
circumference vary from series to series due to:
- Differences in the
plane of section used.
- Differences in the
amount of skin and subcutaneous tissue included in the measurement. Some
series include skin and subcutaneous tissues of the thorax in their
measurement while others measure at the outer, mid or inner perimeter of
the rib cage.
- We measure the thoracic
circumference at the level of the four chamber view of the heart and
exclude the skin and subcutaneous tissues as:
- The size of the
thoracic cage and probably not the soft tissues affects underlying lung
development.
- Abnormalities
affecting the thoracic cage such as achondrogenesis or thanatophoric
dysplasia produce thickening of the subcutaneous tissues which would tend
to overestimate the thoracic circumference
