PLAGIOCEPHALY |
- Unilateral early fusion of one of the paired sutures (coronal or lambdoid suture and rarely the temporosquamous sutures).
- Lopsided skull., but shape is dependent on which suture fuses.
Plagiocephaly
Of The Coronal Suture

- Flattening of the forehead on the affected side and frontal bossing on the opposite side.
- Orbits may be at a different level (may affect binocular vision or result in stabismus, nystagmus, optic atrophy and blindness). Upward elevation of the roof of the orbit may produce a shallow orbit.
- There is iften ipsilateral elevation of the lesser wing of the sphenoid with upward extension of the superior lateral portion of the orbit, imparting a harlequin appearance to the orbit.
- Flattening of the ipsilateral frontal bone is characteristic.
- The volume of the anterior cranial fossa on the ipsilateral side is decreased.
- The greater wing of the sphenoid is expanded, displaced forward and downward, forming a relatively large middle cranial fossa.
- The ethmoidal plate (roof of ethmoid sinus) is elevated on the side of the fusion.
- The nasal septum, crisa galli, and ethmoidal complex are tilted to the side of the fusion.
